Gaining Knowledge

This week was all about gaining knowledge and experience. This week, I learned how to search and interview people for a research project. The first interview that I accomplish was about the literary background of a classmate. It was interesting to hear how she started to read, what her favorite book was and what languages she spoke and plan to expand her knowledge in learning other languages. Another interview, I organized this week was to find research and interview the hometown of a fellow classmate. I was amaze by the fact that Avon is such a small town and the most people who live there are Americans. Getting the knowledge of both of these interviews will help me later on while doing my own interview.

Avon, New Jersey

I never knew that New Jersey had such a small city. The person I interviewed today her hometown in Avon-by –the – Sea New Jersey. My interview started off by talking a little about the history of Avon, which she didn’t know much. The only thing, which she told me was that she believed Avon was called that name was because is very close to the sea. She didn’t know that the city was purchase by a tobacco wealthy man who bought the city for 45,000 dollars. She was very impress when I gave her that information.  We started talking about the schools in Avon she informed me that there is only one official school there. I was impressed me because I am so use of seeing so many schools in my home town. Another thing that we talked about was the people who lived there. She town me that most of them are whites and there is very few Hispanics and blacks. Also, that the Hispanics and blacks like in the other side of the town because they cannot afforded to buy houses where white live. Most of the houses over there cost at least 2 million dollars and the property taxes are very high.  Whites are the most that live in the other side of the town because those houses are left to them from family ancestor. For instance, her house was build by her grandfather and was left to her mother and father when they died. Therefore, the house is later pass to her or any other close family member. Later, we spoke about the authentic food of Avon. She says that there is no authentic food is the normal traditional American food like barbeque, burgers, and steak. She also informed me that there are lots of dinners in Avon city. There is not that much restaurants.
I really enjoyed researching this town because now I know something knew of a place a never knew existed.  When we talked I could tell that she enjoyed living in her hometown until she told me that “sometimes wasn’t cool to live in a place that you know everyone because people will start getting in your business” (Jersey proud.)  Now thinking of her response I believe that it should be really difficult to live in a place that everyone knows one.

Interview Analysis

Today, I interviewed a student, which had a very interesting literacy background. Since a young age she started to speak and read English. Nevertheless, she was taught basic key words in Spanish; due to the fact her grandmother only spoke Spanish. So in order to communicate with her grandmother she was taught Spanish.  As a grown-up she doesn’t only speak Spanish and English. She also knows some Protégées. In the future she will like to learn how to speak and read more Protégées, French, Italian and German.  After asking all her background question we started to talk about how did she began her interest of reading. It was at school and later at home when she was given books to read to improve her reading. She doesn’t remember what book she read for first time, but she really enjoyed reading a bear book. Her interest in reading the most was in eighth grade when she really knew how to read. She lived in Costa Rica back then and to a British school that infancies there students to read a lot. So she says that thanks to the teachers that worked at that school she was able to learn how to read better. She likes to read all types of books and believes that all books have something, which one could learn from it. I asked her that if she had taught other students how to read, her answer was yes. Also, she says that she thought that this girl who she taught how to teach was going to know more English and read better due to the fact that she came from a family that only spoke English. She believes that kids that come from professional parents know less than those that come from unprofessional families and all this is cause by the time professional parents don’t give to their kids.

Ideas

This week, I have looked for sources and completed my proposal. I have made the choice to not only add Latinos and Blacks to the discrimination issue, but also Whites. Not only this issue is affecting t the education system, but also the professional industry. I will like to interview, observe and survey students that go to the writing center to get help and later compare and contrast the attention and support, which the writing center gives to students. I will contrast it with the attention professor’s place on the students. Also, I will conduct an interview for professors and professional, which have experience the situation.. Obviously some professor will actually help their students become a better speaker and writer in the English area, but some will just critic the students and bring him or her expectations down. This week, I have basically focused on completing my proposal and come up with all the question that I have plus the interview and survey questions. I am just waiting for my research project to be approved for I could start this project to gather as much information as possible to be able to let people know some of the issues going on in the education and professional system.

Proposal

This week the process of my research project has been very thoughtful. I am thinking of what am going to research and what am going to write about in my proposal to see if my argument gets approve. I have been thinking of creating my research paper on the discrimination that exists in today's school system and how this has affected many Hispanics and Blacks. Also, how the language have been the fundamental reason why professors have discriminated their students. The idea of this research is to expand my last research on this case and get further arguments from different types of people. This week, I have researched on the internet for new cases of discrimination that have occurred recently in the U.S.A. Nevertheless, this week, I discussed this case with fellow students that gave me lots of great ideas to make my research paper count further in the future in our society.
